SSBYD’s Celebration of Dance
State Street Ballet Young Dancers’ “Celebration of Dance” show will be performed live on the Lobero Theatre stage on Saturday, March 12th at 7pm. We highly encourage younger dancers coming to this show to support our student company, SSBYD. They will be performing Peter and the Wolf as well as a works by SSB Director Rodney Gustafson, Kassandra Taylor Newberry, Natalia Perea, Rae Owen, and emerging student choreographers Jenna Comstock, Fiona Chandrasekaran and Kate Winterbauer.
Gustafson Dance and Teen Dance Star!
Gustafson Dance and SSBYD have three semi-finalists out of ten! Grace Quittner, Sarah Block and Sophia Vraciu will perform in the finals at the Lobero Theatre on Saturday, Jan. 30th.
What is Teen Dance Star?
Teen Dance Star involves teenagers throughout Santa Barbara County in grades 7 through 12 in a months-long program that involves feedback and encouragement to nurture talent at every step. Teen Dance Star starts with the open audition process in which contestants are given tips and techniques by a panel of experts in dance and entertainment. The top 10 finalists then receive personal one-on-one coaching, working through their routines with a celebrity dance mentor, followed by guidance on performance styling to carry the dancers through to the finale.
The ten solo finalists selected from the audition pool will perform at the Lobero Theatre on January 30th, vying for a $1000 dance scholarship.
Moreover, Teen Dance Star has teamed up with the Arts Mentorship Program (AMP) to expand access to the performing arts in Santa Barbara County. The proceeds from the Teen Dance Star Showcase will create funds for families in financial need to provide underprivileged youth the opportunity to train at local dance studios. Notes on Our Spring Performance of Tina Ballerina:
Our Spring performance dates are Saturday, May 28th, 2pm and 6pm; and, Sunday, May 29th at 2pm at the Lobero Theatre.
Tina, the Ballerina is the tale of a young girl from the French countryside who gets the opportunity to go to a dance festival in Paris. On her way, she travels through meadows of flowers, eventually reaching the bustling city with street performers, jesters and the Paris Opera Ballet. Children ages 2 and up are featured in this story of Tina’s adventures.
For our Spring performance, we order costumes that dancers will get to keep in Level 3 ballet classes and below; and, Level 2 Jazz classes and below. For Level 4-6 ballet costumes and Level 3-6 jazz costumes — they will be provided by and kept by Gustafson Dance.
We need costume sizes for everyone no later than January 25th — which is also the Spring semester tuition due date. Costume orders can be made on our website. Here are links to the costume size charts. [Girls Size Chart] [Boy Size Chart]
